Learning fiery lessons for durable law reform: Recruiting now for a fully funded PhD project

Australia is a fire-prone continent. Fire seasons are getting worse, threatening lives, homes, communities, livelihoods and environments across the continent. Australia’s bushfire laws and policies are supposed to help governments and communities prevent catastrophic fires and protect people, nature and economies, but these laws are criticised as ineffective, too complex, and too heavily focused on the past instead of adapting to a changing future.
This project will help to address a significant knowledge gap by examining what ‘better’ bushfire laws could look like in Australia.
This PhD opportunity is part of a major Australian Research Council project, titled: ‘Preparing Australia for a future on fire: Five key strategies to guide evidence-based and equitable law reform’ (DE250101463). The PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr Phillipa McCormack, the Chief Investigator on that larger project, and will benefit from her domestic and overseas research networks including with the International Association of Wildland Fire and Natural Hazards Research Australia.
This PhD position is fully funded and includes a Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics ‘top up’ stipend. The position is available to prospective international and domestic research students who meet the eligibility criteria to gain admission into a Doctor of Philosophy at The University of ºÚÁÏÉçÇø.
Interested candidates should contact the primary supervisor Dr Phillipa McCormack (phillipa.mccormack@adelaide.edu.au) to discuss their suitability and the project requirements. Applications must be submitted by email to Dr McCormack, including a curriculum vitae (max. 5 pages) and a research proposal (max. 2Ìýpages) addressing the proposed project.

Applications will remain open until 30 July 2025 (or until the position is filled). The candidate must commence by 30 September 2025.
