Achieving gender justice for global health equity: the Lancet Commission on gender and global health
On the 20th of June 2025,ÌýStretton Health Equity and the Fay Gale Centre for Research on GenderÌýhosted the Australian launch of The (LCGGH) report on Achieving gender justice for global health equity.
The rollback in gender rights and challenges to global health organisations around the world threatens to reverse decades of progress on global health. This divisive landscape – and its ongoing impact on funding and action – are having stark impacts on health outcomes for people across the globe. The Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health is a multi-disciplinary group of experts who work atÌýthe intersection of gender and health. Together the Commission has produced new research, evidence and recommendations - to provide a practical roadmap to navigate and inform action to improve health and wellbeing for everyone.
The keynote speaker was Professor Sarah Hawkes. Prof Hawkes isÌýco-Chair Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health, andÌýHead of Global Population Health at Monash University Malaysia and Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Global 50/50.Ìý Professor Emerita Raewyn Connell (Commissioner on Lancet Commission and University of Sydney) spoke about the importance of the report to Australia and globally and Professor Barbara Baird AM (Flinders University) will then speak about the fight for reproductive justice in South Australia. Holly Skenes then discussed the relevance of the report to gender and health services in Australia.
A panel discussion followed examining aspects of the report in light of intense global debates about the politics nature and value of gender perspectives.
