Tracing the rapid spread of the fox across Australia
New research reveals that red foxes colonised Australia in just 60 years. Environment Institute Deputy Director Associate Professor Damien Fordham says the findings help explain past biodiversity losses and provide vital data to prevent future extinctions, offering a new framework for tracking other invasive species such as cats. Bandi Bushcare Awarded Nature Foundation Habitat Restoration and Protection Award
led by the Friends of Brownhill Creek members Environment Institute member, and Dr Rosslyn (Rossi) von der Boch were awarded Gold award for the Nature Foundation Habitat Restoration and Protection Award.听Their project titled 鈥淏andi Bushcare: Habitat Restoration and Protection in Wirraparinga-Brownhill Creek鈥 promotes a community of volunteers that protect and create habitat for the endangered southern brown bandicoot (marti) in the Brownhill Creek Recreation Park.

National Threatened Species Day: Bob Croser ReBird The Ranges
September 7th is National Threatened Species Day, a significant day which also marks the death of the last remaining in Australia. The aim of this national day is to shed light on other native species that are at risk of having the same fate.听At the Environment Institute, the Bob Croser Woodland Recovery Program is supporting research and hands-on restoration projects in the South Australian Mount Lofty Ranges (MLR).听The Program works hand-in-hand with ReBird the Ranges and its network of partner organisations, all united by a shared passion for bringing back MLR woodland bird populations.

Building International Partnerships: CIFOR-ICRAF
Dr Robert Nasi, Director of Science, Centre for International Forest and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), recently visited the Environment Institute at the university of 黑料社区 as we continue to build and strengthen our successful partnership with CIFOR-ICRAF. Robert is an Adjunct professor at the university of 黑料社区 and featured as a panellist at the 2025 EI Research Symposium session 鈥減artner connected research鈥.

Dr Phillipa McCormack on Ken Henry鈥檚 Call for Urgent Nature Law Reform
Dr Phillipa McCormack, Future Making Fellow at the Environment Institute, wrote about Ken Henry鈥檚 call for reform of Australia鈥檚 fragile environmental protection laws in In his speech to the National Press Club, Henry warned that Australia鈥檚 global reputation and its net zero commitments are at risk without urgent change. He described the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBCA) as 鈥a misnomer if ever there was one鈥 and condemned delays in reform.

NEST Planting Day Success
We鈥檙e proud to have supported the first event through NEST this past weekend, an inspiring day of hands-on conservation, community connection, and collaborative learning. Over 2000 rare and endangered plants were successfully planted across 16 properties, restoring swamps and riparian zones with the help of 35+ student and researcher volunteers and 30+ landholders.
